COLOR KEY -- PROJECTED BY RED SHEET:
Starter / Back Up/ Injured/Unable to Practice/ Practice Squad/Bubble/Unsigned, Not Under Contract ER, (UFA or RFA)
Quarterbacks:
End of Preseason     Cards brought in Kolb (who's siezed the opportunity and is solid as our starting QB). Skelton and Bartels will be the backups. Bartels, in particular has displayed terriific accuracy but has to clean up a tendency to occasionally lose focus, "try to hard" and make poor throwing decisions.
04 Kevin Kolb 6-3 218 U of Houston - Philly (trade)
19 John Skelton 6-5½ 243 Fordham (D5)
02 Bartel, Richard QB 6-3 230 27 2 Tarleton State
14 Brodie Croyle 6-2 206 (FA-6) Alabama
06 Max Hall 6-1 205 BYU (UDFA2)
03 Derek Anderson 6-6 230 Oregon State (FA Cleveland)
Running Backs:
End of Preseason     Presents a varied look - All purpose prime timer (Wells), scatback (LSH) and one-cut thumper (Smith). Added Taylor after the Final 53 cutdown date. He can catch, pass block and provides veteran leadership to the position.. Cards shocked everyone by drafting Williams at #38 as a BPA no-brainer. Although the larder was already full, he brought more wiggle and home-run potential than provided by Beanie or Hightower. Only main concern was his durability. (Note - Ruptured patella tendon vs. GB and out for season).
26 Beanie Wells RB 6-2 229 Ohio State
46 Alfonso Smith RB 6-1 208 23 R Kentucky

36 LaRod Stephens-Howling RB PItt (D7a)
29 Chester Taylor RB 5-11 213 Toledo (FA Chi)
45 Reagan Maui'ia FB 6-0 260 Hawaii

35 Anthony Sherman FB 5-10 242 UConn
37 William Powell 5-9 205 RB K-State UDFA

34 Ryan Williams RB 5-9 212 Virginia Tech
34 Tim Hightower RB 6-0 217 Richmond (D5)
31 Jason Wright RB 5-10 215 Northwestern (FA - Browns)

Wide Receivers:
End of Preseason     Fitz is back, Doucet and Roberts seem more poised and seasoned. Stuckey brings a veteran presence and crisp route running skills. Williams and Sampson are the two red zone "beasts" though we now have that capability with the TE's.
11 Larry Fitzgerald, Pitt, 6-3 223 (D1
12 Andre Roberts WR 5-10¾ 195 Citadel (D3)

17 Chansi Stuckey 6-0 196 Clemson

16 Daiveun Curry-Chapman 6-2 195 No Arizona UDFA

15 Steve Breaston WR/PKR (D5) 6-0 193 Michigan
Tight Ends:
End of Preseason     Heap is our most talented TE since Jackie Smith. King is a blocking force who should help our running game. Cards drafted a sub 4.6 TE in Housler - expected to stretch defenses. In preseason game 4 vs. Denver. Dray is more versatile but also more marginal. We're kind of surprised he survived the final cut. Could be IR's do to injured pec.
86 Todd Heap 6-5 245 Arizona State (Ravens)
87 Jeff King 6-3 260 Va. Tech (Panthers)

Offensive Linemen:
End of Preseason     Faneca (retired) and Claxton (cut) are gone. But 7 linemen (Brown, Sendlein, Lutui. Hadnot, Keith and Bridge) are still with us, and Colledge (who started in GB) is here replace Faneca and we kept one developmental newbie in Batiste.

Defensive Linemen:
End of Preseason    Campbell and Dockett are back as our 2 starting bookends. Williams mans the middle but has been playing his way into shape since arriving overweight to start training camp. Holliday (who came in trade for Hightower) seems to have more than a little juice left in the old pitcher and could make a huge impact as a backup and in rotation. Carter is pushing Williams for the starting NT job, and everytime I see Eason, he seems to be stuffing a RB on the inside. Talley survived the final cut, but I'm still wondering why.
90 Darnell Dockett DT-DE 6-3 292 Florida St. (D3)
93 Calais Campbell DE 6-8 283 Miami (D2)

Linebackers:
End of Preseason    Lots of personnel here. Lots of questions too.   We open the season with Porter (AARP-material) and Schofield (a youngster who only played late in last season) our two outside pass rushing hope. Does Joey have anything left? Will Schohawk continue to deliver on high expectations? Haggans returns to man the strong outside and occasionally surprise us with a game-changing defensive play. Daryl Washington is a year more experienced and should be more impactful). Like Haggans, Lenon provides a solid, stablizing (though not necessarily spectacular) presence. Acho was drafted this past spring. Acho, a smart guy, is built like Woodley or Harrison (but may not be as quick or explosive on the outside). He may be better suited to play inside. We saved the best for last - Stewart Bradley (FA from Philly) - when healthy - is a smart, physical, game-changing LB who hasn't been healthy for a couple of years, but he evidently is now. Watch out!
55 Joey Porter 6-3 255 (FA Miami and Pittsburgh
53 Clark Haggans LOLB 6-4 243 Colo State (Steelers - FA)

Defensive Backs:
End of Preseason     Cards traded DRC in order to land their starting QB (Kolb). Then they lost Greg Toler to injury. But they still look pretty formidable in the secondary. Jefferson (who reminded us of DRC prior to the draft 2 springs ago) now steps in for DRC and seems to be a more reliable and physical tackler and even more aggressive as a ballhawk. On the other side, it figures to be newcomer Marshall (more of a McFadden-type  zone guy but more aggressive to the ball). Adams (If he were 6-inches taller, would be a Pro Bowl player) is terriific in the slot (so long as Horton can keep him out of unfavorable match-ups). Which gives Horton and his staff ample time to phase in Peterson as ready. cards bolstered CB depth with additions of Butler and Lindsay. Big question in the secondary is at SS where Adrian Wilson (pec) plans ot forgoe surgery and play. Two concerns: (1) that he not risk further injury and (2) that a wounded Wilson wonn't be as good as a healthy Abdullah or (if we were to go that way) Peterson. Rhodes remainsa strong force at FS.

Specialty Teams:
End of Preseason    Feely remains a solid (& reassuring) presence. The buzz about Graham turned out to be true. He's gone and Zastudil is here. We think what happened was that Graham (a maestro of the pooch kick inside the ten) was unreliable booming punts long enough & with enough hang-time to get us out of the shadow of our own end zone. Peterson (who looks like a veteran out there returning punts) could be used a s spot home-run hitter to help out Roberts and LSH in the return game.
04 Jay Feely K 510 208 Michigan(Jets)
09 Dave Zastudil P 6-3 220 (FA-9) Ohio U
82 Mike Leach, LS, 6-2 220 William & Mary (FA Broncos)
05 Ben Graham P/H 6-5 235 (FA) Jets
09 Derek Epperson 6-3 240 P Baylor UDFA
Practice Squad:
End of Preseason    Cards were able to clear Green, Lumpkin, Williams and Young through waivers after the final cutdown. They added a highly regarded center in Bartholomew and another tall guy (Harvey) at WR. There are still two openings on the PS, with the buzz being that the Cards will add Sturdivant and Talley if they clear waivers. As in past seasons, the PS is a fluid category, with players coming and going (upward and downward reminiscent of George Steinbrenner's "Columbus - Yankee Shuttle. Check here regularly.
